Why I Started Giving My Dog Supplements (and Why You Should Consider It Too!)

If you’ve been following along, you already know how much I adore my dog, Cookie. She’s smart, energetic, sensitive and unfortunately, she’s also prone to some breed-specific health issues. After countless hours researching how to keep her healthy and comfortable, I’ve realized the most important thing: prevention truly is easier than cure!

Cookie at her favorite park

As dog parents, we’re responsible for staying ahead of potential health issues rather than waiting until something goes wrong. This philosophy applies to my own health as well as Cookie’s. Preventive care through healthy food and supplements has become a staple in our home and here’s why.

First things first: Aussies are known for being highly active, intelligent, and incredibly sensitive dogs. But along with their vibrant personalities, they come with specific health challenges.

Cookie, like many Aussies, has a thick, double-layered coat that tends to shed (a lot….). But shedding isn’t just messy; it’s closely tied to skin health. Allergies, skin irritations, and dry coats are all common issues for Australian Shepherds. Beyond the coat and skin, Aussies are notoriously susceptible to joint issues, hip dysplasia, and general mobility challenges as they age. They’re athletic dogs who often push their bodies to the limit, which can lead to wear and tear.

Cookie has also struggled with mild seasonal allergies since puppyhood like itchy paws, redness between toes, and lots of scratching. Living in an urban environment where pollution and allergens are common hasn’t helped. After discussing these concerns with my veterinarian and diving into a ton of research, I knew adding specific supplements could significantly improve Cookie’s quality of life.

Let’s talk about why I chose Native Pet. To be totally transparent, I’ve tried plenty of different supplement brands for Cookie and honestly, I still use a mix of brands for various needs (which I always openly share here!). Some were just okay, others didn’t do much, but Native Pet truly stood out because of their clear ingredient lists, dedication to quality, and most importantly, the noticeable difference they’ve made in Cookie’s health.

I usually add some water to her bowl for hydration whenever I give her kibble instead of wet food. I took this pic beforehand. Make sure to hydrate your dog’s food!

Here’s exactly what we use daily and why:

The Daily

The Daily is my peace-of-mind supplement. I know Cookie’s getting balanced nutritional support, even if she occasionally gets picky with food. Think of it as your dog’s daily multivitamin, but much more powerful and targeted.

What’s Inside and Why It Matters:

  • Spirulina: Packed with antioxidants, spirulina boosts your dogs’ immune system and helps protect against environmental toxins a big help especially for an urban dog.
  • Probiotics & Prebiotics: Probiotics help maintain a balanced gut microbiome, leading to fewer tummy troubles, essential for pups with sensitive stomach.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Great for skin health and coat shine, omega-3 fatty acids keep your dogs’ coat soft, silky, and less prone to shedding. I’ve noticed significantly fewer hairballs around the house since adding this!

Wondergland

Wondergland is a targeted supplement specifically created to support healthy anal gland function, which is a surprisingly common issue, even though not everyone likes talking about it openly!

What’s Inside and Why It Matters:

  • Pumpkin Seed Fiber: Rich in dietary fiber, pumpkin seed helps ensure healthy, firm stools, naturally promoting regular and comfortable gland function.
  • Psyllium Husk: A gentle soluble fiber that encourages digestive health and bowel regularity, helping prevent uncomfortable gland buildup.
  • Probiotics: Support balanced gut health and overall digestion, keeping Cookie comfortable and regular.

Honestly, we’re obsessed with this supplement for another big reason. It’s reduced our dreaded “dingleberry drama”! Long-haired dog parents know exactly what I mean: there’s nothing worse than seeing those little “surprises” stuck in the fluffy butt curtains. Thanks to Wondergland, we finally don’t have to wash Cookie’s backside after every potty break. Her booty is happier, my life is easier, and laundry days are far less traumatic!

Can we pause for a second to talk about how hilarious the name “Wondergland” is? Every single time I grab the container from the shelf, I genuinely giggle. It sounds like a magical theme park I never wanted tickets to lol but somehow, it’s exactly the kind of “magic” Cookie’s fluffy butt needed! Kudos to whoever at Native Pet came up with that name; you’ve made our daily supplement routine just a little more entertaining!

Our other two favorites from Native Pet—though we don’t necessarily use them every single day are Allergy and Sockeye Salmon Oil. Cookie often struggles with seasonal allergies, resulting in itchy paws and constant scratching. The Allergy supplement, featuring colostrum to soothe irritation, spirulina to naturally ease allergic reactions, and probiotics for gut health, significantly reduces these symptoms whenever flare-ups occur. Similarly, the Sockeye Salmon Oil, loaded with omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA), is perfect for Cookie’s thick Aussie coat, helping reduce shedding, inflammation, and dry skin. A quick drizzle on her meals occasionally keeps her coat soft, shiny, and healthy!

Don’t just take my word for it! The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) agrees that when supplements are chosen appropriately and administered with veterinary guidance, they can genuinely support your dog’s health. Supplements like omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine, and chondroitin have proven beneficial for issues like skin allergies, inflammation, and joint health.

Personally, I started Cookie on supplements to prevent health issues rather than treating them later, and I truly believe proactive care makes a huge difference, especially given today’s environmental challenges like pollution and allergens. Native Pet supplements have noticeably improved Cookie’s coat, skin, digestion, and overall comfort. Supplements aren’t magic cures but they’re powerful preventive tools that help us return the unconditional love our dogs give every single day!
